Super Decisions: latest financial tips and safety checks on superannuation

2 October 2002

Today the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) released its latest guide to superannuation - Super decisions: understanding and making superannuation choices.

In plain language Super decisions presents a completely independent guide to the essential facts and choices about superannuation that face working Australians. It offers step-by-step financial tips and safety checks.

'Superannuation is a part of life for most Australians. For many people, it's their biggest asset outside their home. Yet many of us admit we don't really know enough about our super and how we can get the most out of it', said ASIC's Executive Director, Consumer Protection, Mr Peter Kell.

'ASIC wants people to be as informed about their super as they are about any other aspect of their working life', Mr Kell said.

In plain English, Super decisions explains

'Super decisions started out just by asking a range of people about their superannuation experiences. Many people had a story to tell about how they could have made better choices, or avoided pitfalls, if only they had better understood superannuation. ASIC decided it was time to share experience and knowledge around', Mr Kell said.

'Super decisions forms a vitally important plank in ASIC's consumer education strategy', Mr Kell said.

The guide is free and copies are available through ASIC's consumer website www.fido.asic.gov.au or in hard copy through ASIC's Infoline on 1300 300 630.
